- 1683, from Ger. kobold "goblin," term silver miners used for worthless rock, laced with arsenic and sulphur, from which the element was extracted, from M.H.G. kobe "hut, shed" + *holt "goblin," from hold "gracious, friendly," complimentary words used to avoid the wrath of troublesome beings. Extended to a color 1835.
